I have always enjoyed hiking on the C&O Canal. I'm legally blind, so for me, most of the time I need to get up close to see almost anything to enjoy... I'm able to enjoy the trees, plants and wild life. While there may not be some thing I'm unable to see, rare flowers or animals, there are markers posted with pictures and information about what I'm looking for. I'm always with a friend who can read to me what is written on the post, and I'm able to see the pictures and enjoy everything everyone else enjoys as well... There's a lot of history about the C&O Canal. When I was in the Girl Scouts, I had the honors of riding a bike along the Canal and learned so much... It's amazing.
I love coming here to relax. It's very peaceful and beautiful! They do have portable toilets, but none of them had toilet paper. As someone said, there are a few pokestops and a gym. My kids actually don't mind walking a few miles when we go.
Hidden away spot below the bridge. Not obvious unless you stumble upon it. Great spot for biking. Right along the river. Historic. You can ride or jog between the river and the old Canal locks.
Rather pristine setting, boat ramps, swimming, fishing and numerous port-a-potties that are relatively clean.
The ride along the river is gorgeous (or walk/run/jog). The trail is just smooth enough that I survived inn a road bike. I'll be using a different bike next time but I certainly enjoyed the ride. (Rode 15 miles from Shepherds Town). Bonus - you're pretty much in shade the whole way.
